Wilderness survival guide

The Wilderness Survival Skills website is dedicated to providing useful information for safe wilderness traveling.

Safe wilderness travel

I love to spend time in the great wilderness. My excursions have provided me with many unforgettable experiences, and I have learned how vulnerable human beings are and how knowledge of wilderness survival is of the highest importance.

Anyone could find themselves in an emergency situation and even the most basic survival knowledge could mean the difference between life and death. A basic understanding of survival techniques should enable anyone to travel through the wilderness with an increased level of confidence and enjoyment

Be Prepared

The best time to practice any wilderness survival skills - start a fire, shelter building or whatever - is before you need them. Take some time to read all the information contained in this website. You will learn how to take care of yourself and others when traveling in the wilderness, and I’m sure that your next excursion will provide you with a greater level of enjoyment due to your newfound knowledge.

Safety is your responsibility

It is important for you to understand that the information provided here is for educational purposes only and is not to be considered as a substitute for specific training or actual experience. Feedback from readers:

As an avid Mountaineer, hiker, Mountain biker, kayaker and Nature lover, and being raised by Wonderful parents in this environment, I still find your tips and skills amazing. When a person stops learning, or is to stubborn/egotistic (hubris) to absorb more knowledge, those are the ones who....not only get themselves in sometimes costly situations, but others as well.

Thank you. Please keep up this vital source of information for all to learn and enjoy.

Many Happy Trails,

Chris Black

Erik, awesome info and website, I spent 8 year’s in the U.S Army, trained in detail on desert and jungle survival. Keep up the awesome work and good luck.

Mark

Hello Erik and thank you for the informative web site. Even basic wilderness survival skills are new to me and your site is helping me a lot.

Thanks Erik for your webpage. I teach a "survival for the lost" course every other year in Oregon, to elementary children from our local school. I use your hints finding water, building shelters, etc.) for much of my class. My goal is to make even the youngest member to feel empowered in situations that are unexpected. Vacation stops and other roadside situations where kids may get separated and "lost" in wilderness settings.

With awareness and rational approach to offset panic, most of "my kids" may be survivors and have stories to tell rather than having stories to tell about them--by recovery teams. Again thanks

Bill ("Ranger Red" for my students)
