machete

I agree that it would likely have its limitations and I don't think it would be my 'tool of choice' if I was lucky enough to pick after being lost in the wild. I wouldn't turn it down though as there would be significant benefits to having it as well. Chopping down some sturdy saplings for a nice shelter, using it for extra reach for that nice ripe piece of fruit etc... all things are useful in a survival situation.

As far as 'needing' a screwdriver/pliers etc..in the wild; I would say that having those tools would be to a persons benefit for survival. It seems that in a survival situation any and all options/tools/supplies must be considered in order to live through the ordeal. Having a pliers, a screwdriver, a few bits of wire, or other objects you may not normally pay attention to in day-to-day living, may make the difference between life and death in a survival situation. Just my .02 for what its worth.

I think that a machete is to big and more weight than needed. I dont know how you hammer with it but it can make things easier but be to much. You can not do small cutting with it. A leatherman is handy but if you are lost in the wild I dont think you will need sissors, pliers and a screwdriver. The most handy thing on a multitool would be a saw and a file for metal.
