yep, multiple knives + Leatherman...
by: mutt

I started collecting knives when I was 6...still have my first blade...a cheap Boy Scout knock off...I'm 51 now and I've carried dozens of knives from all over the world and now I carry a RAT 7 with a diamond sharpener and a magnesium fire starter in the side pocket of the sheath... a Leatherman on my belt, a mini Leatherman in my pocket and a small CRKT tanto tipped serrated blade as my neck knife...wrapped with para cord...it's perfect for a spear...(but you need to add a barb to the spear if you want to fish with it...It's also fun to throw at stumps...the tanto tip is tough...)(I also put a 120 db whistle and a small compass on the lanyard...no bear can cover their ears...)

I also have another small fixed blade in my survival pack and I usually carry a redundant spike tomahawk just cause it's cool...and handy...although I can do anything I need to do with the knives I carry...I know I carry redundant blades but I would rather carry the extra weight than be without...for that matter, I carry at least a second of everything...I carry three camps with me...one base camp with the big stuff, one camp I leave in my canoe, w/ main first aid, extra clothes, raingear, etc....(I solo camp in the BWCAW a lot so if I mess up, I'm screwed)...and one survival camp in my backpack which I carry everywhere...even wandering around my camp...it's light, I throw it on, and forget about it...I've never had to use anything in it but it sure is comforting...it contains everything I could need...I figure I could break my leg in the middle of nowhere and be ok for up to a week without moving anywhere...

Just a few tips. Whenever my roll of 100 mph tape gets low, I rip out the cardboard, step on it flat and put it in my backpack...it's one of the most versatile things you can have with you...binder/firestarter/etc. a hooded reflective blanket is light and reusable...extra para cord is handy for everything...the inner strings can be used for fishing and the outside can still be used for lashing...so much more but I'm running out of characters...

multi pliers in the field
by: John

I agree having multi pliers handy make any job you have to do easier. Having the different tools like the saw blade, the file,or can opener available can be useful. I started carrying My Gerber pliers shorty after joining The National Guard as a Combat Engineer whether in the motor pool or the field I found many uses for the muti pliers. As I said before I carry SOGs Seal Pup which has a handy pouch on the sheath. My Gerber fits in nicely.

I find this site to be wonderful being able to share knowledge and gain a new look on what works and what does not is great. If you have spent anytime outdoors you know both the joys and how quickly things can go wrong. Being prepared for both just makes sense.

TwoKnivesAndMultitool
by: BillyTheBushwacker

In a survival situation the "Bigger is Better" rule should be in play. A big knife, like the excellent D2 Kershaw Outcast, backed up by the fine SRK or Seal Pup makes for an incredible combination. I have used the SRK/Outcast many times over the past year and have yet to find an opportunity that could not be handled. To make the world of survival more viable a solid multi tool will only make the tasks easier. Buy them, carry them, need them, use them!

Multiple knives
by: Anonymous

I agree that carrying several knives is a good idea when your out in the wilds. Though I usually carry a good heavy fixed blade as well as several folders and a hatchet or machete when I am out fishing or camping!

Always carry two survival knives

Concur...two knives plus pocket knife an excellent suggestion. Some suggest a Swedish fixed blade Mora knife and a larger thick blade like the SRK or the Ontario RAT series. I like the Buck Omni Folder Knife it is built strong and is very sharp.
