Always carry two survival knives

by John
(Ofallon IL)

Over then years of military service as a Combat Engineer and camping trips with the family I have had the opportunity to use many knives. The two knives that stand out to me are the Cold Steel SRK and the SOG Seal Pup.

These are both very durable knives and can get you through any task. They have a noticeable weight difference. I use the SRK for heavy work and the Seal Pup for light tasks and also for scouting trips. The sheath on the SRK needs some reworking to perfect it. The sheath for the Seal Pup is very versatile and can be carried in several ways, which is useful.

For everyday carry the SOG Flash II is a wonderful pocket knife, I use it for everything, and it has never let me down. It is a light weight knife and you can forget its even there on your belt.

Depending on your personal preference any of these knives will do the job.

I would use the above mentioned knives in any survival situation where my life hung in the balance.

While there are many good and more expensive knives out there, when it comes right down to it a knife is a tool that has many uses. And the price of the tool does not make any difference, it's whether or not the tool will perform when you need it too over and over that counts most.

multi pliers in the field
by: John

I agree having multi pliers handy make any job you have to do easier. Having the different tools like the saw blade, the file,or can opener available can be useful. I started carrying My Gerber pliers shorty after joining The National Guard as a Combat Engineer whether in the motor pool or the field I found many uses for the muti pliers. As I said before I carry SOGs Seal Pup which has a handy pouch on the sheath. My Gerber fits in nicely.

I find this site to be wonderful being able to share knowledge and gain a new look on what works and what does not is great. If you have spent anytime outdoors you know both the joys and how quickly things can go wrong. Being prepared for both just makes sense.

In a survival situation the "Bigger is Better" rule should be in play. A big knife, like the excellent D2 Kershaw Outcast, backed up by the fine SRK or Seal Pup makes for an incredible combination. I have used the SRK/Outcast many times over the past year and have yet to find an opportunity that could not be handled. To make the world of survival more viable a solid multi tool will only make the tasks easier. Buy them, carry them, need them, use them!

Multiple knives
by: Anonymous

I agree that carrying several knives is a good idea when your out in the wilds. Though I usually carry a good heavy fixed blade as well as several folders and a hatchet or machete when I am out fishing or camping!

Concur...two knives plus pocket knife an excellent suggestion. Some suggest a Swedish fixed blade Mora knife and a larger thick blade like the SRK or the Ontario RAT series. I like the Buck Omni Folder Knife it is built strong and is very sharp.
