Bratstvo knife

by Bruno Islas
(México D.F.)

I have a Yugoslavian knife. I think it was used by soldiers. It is marked with the legend: "440 bratstvo", and has a serrated edge and a compartment with a capsule with a mini survival kit.

I think it is good. Could anyone tell me please something about this knife? Thank you

as above: hollow handle=broken knife.
A Decoration; useful only for what may be stashed in the handle.

use of such ablade

To use this street-fighting blade in the traditional Srpski style, hold in fist with blade forward & out from body. After that,it gets messy. Hollow handle: a pretty toy.

Survival Knife Feedback
by: Dustin

The reference I was able to find for Bratstvo is a Serbian clan (extended family) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serb_clans#Clan_.28bratstvo.29

440 likely references the type of steel the knife is made of - 440 Carbon steel

In my opinion, these "survival" knives that have hollow handles are inherently weak in design, as they do not have a full tang - the metal stops at the hilt (or shortly thereafter) to accomodate the hollow handle. They just don't hold up to much abuse that you might deal out when in the bush. In addition, the small space that is afforded in teh handle usually doesn't hold much - you would be better off with an emergency pack made up in a small can or something that you just keep in your pocket.

I have seen similar designes to this knife for may years [http://www.knife-depot.com/knife-128843.html ~ $16] - they look cool, and seem fuctional, but suffer when abused - I wouldn't choose to rely on it in a survival situation, but it's certainly better than bare hands!
