Cabin fire

by Matt
(United States)

After all the years I have spent in the boy scouts and having them tell you a tipi is the best way to start a fire, I disagree. I do agree that a tipi is a good way to make a fire but, you need to have the time to start it and you need the time to balance every piece precisely just for it to fall down.

I have found that if you make a cabin fire (much like making a lincoln log house) it is much more effective.

homemade firestarter
by: Matt

One homemade firestarter that I have found to be effective can be made from an egg carton, dryer lint, and wax (melted crayons or candles will work). It is very effective and is a good way to reuse some things that would otherwise be thrown out. First, separate the individual cells of an egg carton. Fill each piece of the egg carton with as much dryer lint as you can fit inside. Pour hot wax onto the dryer lint. It will soak up a lot of wax. finally dip the entire thing into the wax, leaving a small area out so it doesn't get covered in wax. When you are ready to use the firestarter just light the unwaxed part of the egg carton. It will burn for a long time.
