Cold weather survival

by Jerry Watt
(Colorado)

Winter weather can be wonderful

Winter weather can be wonderful

..... or sleeping outdoors in cold weather. I think one of the best ways to stay warm in cold weather is to build a hot coal bed. Why sleep on the cold ground when you can warm it up a little?

- Dig up soil around eight inches deep and as long and as wide as your body.

- Build a fire in the hole. Burn the fire for a certain amount of time. Spread out the coal evenly.

- Fill in the hole and wait about 30 minutes before you place your bed on top. The hot coals will heat up the soil and keep you warm until morning.

You will find that your bed will remain warm throughout the night – even in temperatures below freezing.

If the ground isn't frozen, cut the sod and roll it back, then lay down and pull it over you for a blanket.

Improve your sleeping bag
by: Sam

In cold weather, stuff the inside of your sleeping bag with leaves or pine needles then in the morning just unzip it then turn it inside out and shake it out!

by: Mike

Hi guys, just a short tip to stay warmer at night. Sleep with your head slightly downhill. It takes some getting used to, but it works.

Thanks Jerry,

the firebed is a great way to sleep outdoors in cold weather without the need for a little more than a blanket. Actually it’s technique used by many cultures during periods of cold weather when adequate insulation isn’t readily available.
