Fire Trough

Man using a fire trough.

Man using a fire trough.

A fire trough is a slab of relatively flat, durable wood about 1 - 2 feet in length with a long groove that runs down the middle of it, continuing down toward the base. There is also a spindle as wide as the groove that can be ran down its length.

To construct a fire, kneel down.

Place the trough under your foot, so the groove end is running away from you to the ground.

Place tinder under groove end. Then push your spindle through the groove repeatedly. The groove will start to heat up, and eventually will heat up enough to char the groove, and hot ashes will be pushed down the groove into the tinder.

Once enough ashes have been gathered in the tinder, blow it into flame.

Difficult to make it work.

Based on my experiences with the fire trough, I have found that while it is easy to make, it is hard to create fire with. It takes a long time of extensive rubbing to get the wood to char.
