Get a knife with a bright colored handle

by Dan Russell
(Northern Maine)

Just a note about knives in the wilderness. As a hunter and professional forester with over 35 years experience in the woods, my favorite pet peeve is this:

For a survival knife I would like to see the handle a bright color, not black, or camo as is often advertised in hunting catalogs. I have come very close to losing my knife more than once while field dressing game and laying it on the ground. There is nothing "sexy" or manly about a lost knife in a survival situation. There are many quality knives made, but a lost knife is "no knife at all".

Do you want to safely enjoy the wilderness?

dont loose that knife
by: jac

how bout just a piece of string (lanyard) I tie
a single strand of parachute line (the threads in the middle-i mean) through the lanyard hole in my becker
especially when fishing fording creeks and often times at night nothing fancy and never too heavy a line cause you dont want this to not be able to break away clean with a good jerk. One guy I know
even takes a couple of the glowing necklaces with him loops one through the lanyard hole on his knife when it get dark he breaks the vial and the necklace glows almost all night

However they are more expensive than regular ones.
The sheath could still be green but the handle orange.

RC 4 in bright orange
by: Anonymous

Many times I'm working in the woods at night be it gutting a deer or cutting some marshmellow sticks or making some kindling to make a fire and it is great to be able to put the knife down on the ground and find it easily. It also sticks out when reaching into a back pack in dim light. Bright orange is the best. Check out the Rat Cutlery site. I have the RC 4 and it is fantastic, you will not be dissapointed.

And also

You could take the knife you already own, and wrap the handle in a brightly colored slip-resistant tape.

knives
by: Nomad

Thier is a knife called a MORA that has different colored handles and are highly recommended in the self reliant/survival realm. Go to the web and type in MORA KNIVES to locate them, these are 6-7 inch fixed blade knives.

Brother,

Great wilderness advice. I couldn't agree more. I used to use a black fire starter but recently changed to the Swiss "Scout" fire starter because they offer them in many bright colors. I use the red one and have on a few occasions set the old one down to grab more woods to keep the fire going and almost lost it. A nice one piece with a bright red survival handle would be great! Sounds like a good invention if you ask me!!! Of course, we will all probably see them here in the next few weeks because of your great advice......you know how some companies can be, all for the money!

I agree
by: Brian from PA

Hi Dan,

I can't agree more about the color of knife handles and other important survival gear! I for one have lost articles because I sat them down and lost them in the foliage. Since then i've painted the butt end of the 22 to bright orange also my pocket survival kit is blaze orange. Very good advice.
Stay safe.
Brian
