Bamboo
by: Richard

Dried bamboo when scraped into shavings is a very good fire starter, and it burns slower than other materials. You also can use bamboo to make a friction fire, and it works very well.

flint
by: Anonymous

Hi,
Surprised this hasn't been suggested.

If you live in an area where there is flint, simply find two pieces, and strike them together over some tinder. Now, it can take quite a while to generate a spark which 'takes', but it is possible.

Making waterproof matches
by: Steve

You can make waterproof matches by coating them in melted candle wax. Helps them burn longer too.
