The foreign object will cause you to produce saliva, which will keep your mouth moist and stave off the feeling of thirst. The only time this trick may be a problem is in the case of being in a state of dehydration, where the organs and muscles need the moisture more than the palate.

Conversely, use of tobacco products will cause your mouth to dry out and induce a sensation of thirst.
