My Ka-Bar combat knife

by Brandon
(Davenport, Iowa)

My favorite survival knife would have to be a Ka-Bar combat knife. It is a full tang high carbon steel blade that is Teflon coated and they are sharpened by laser when you get them knew.

They have a flat bottom on the handle so you can use it like a hammer, like pounding in tent stakes for example. They have finger guards on both sides and a grooved handle.

Field tested for over 60 years
by: Jeff

The Ka-Bar knife has been used in every American conflict since WWII by multiple branches of the United States military, most notably the United States Marine Corps. It has been field tested for over 60 years in some of the roughest conflicts this planet has ever seen, with superb results. The Ka-bar comes out of the box razor sharp, and it holds that sharpness extremely well over time and punishment. This is a fixed blade , thick full tang knife, with either a leather or other SOLID material composite handle, I have not seen a model with a hollow handle. The above three properties are the fundamental base for a decent, durable, long lasting survival/combat/wilderness multi-task knife.

Today, KA-BAR makes Army and Navy versions as well as USMC versions. Marines today often give the blades, guards and pommels of their knives a few coats of non-reflective matte black spray paint to reduce reflected light and give them a little more protection against saltwater corrosion. Its moderate carbon and low chromium steel mixture allows the blade to hold an edge very well. The 1095 cro-van steel used in the blades of today's KA-BARs has a hardness of 56–58 HRC; the guard and pommel are made from sintered 1095 carbon steel.Outside combat, the knife has been used to open cans, dig trenches, and cut wood and roots. In 1995, the design was updated with a tool steel blade, synthetic handle, and synthetic sheath marketed as "The Next Generation".

The Ka-bar comes in many different shapes and sizes, but usually found in a traditional fixed 7"-9" knife blade (not including handle). There are many different types, shapes, and sizes, including serrated or straight blade. This knife is legendary, and its simple design will keep it popular for another 60 years. This is a tried and true, no bulls**t knife. Its made in the USA for the military. At the time of this review (2010), the knife can be found from $40 USC to $70 USC on many different websites including, but not limited to, amazon.com and ebay. At this price, its a steal. Most knives of this quality easily go well over $100 USC. Buy one and you won't regret it, it's one of those things that will last multiple lifetimes.
