Moon ring

Moon ring

When traveling in the wilderness and preparing for bad weather, look to see if a ring is around the moon. If so, bad weather will come in 24 hours. If the ring has a break in it, that is the direction it will come from.

Don't forget the sun and the cloud people too :)
by: Winyan Staz

"Red sky in the morning, sailors take warning."
"Red sky at night, sailors delight." And so we need to pay attention to the sun rising and setting also.
If you are near a mountain close to a coastal area, when storms are coming in from the coast, a mountain will "put on a white belt"..meaning a very low band of white clouds with the mountain peak showing above.
Native Americans also know that when "The Cloud People (whisps of clouds) stand up and walk on the mountain side..(you will see clouds forming tall vertical slender whisps that move on the mountain side)....a lot of rain is coming very soon."

Thank you for the great post on the moon..you taught me something new as I didnt know the break indicated the direction the storm would come. :)

72 instead of 24 hours
by: Denis

I have used this for more than a decade and it has been correct 100 percent of the time. However I want to say in the next 72 hours instead of 24 hours.

Folk rhyme
by: Anonymous

Yes, it is sometimes possible to see just this.
There is even a folk rhyme about it-- When there is a ring around the moon, rain or snow is coming soon.

Moon ring
by: Jess

The ring around the Moon is caused by the refraction of sunlight (or moonlight) from ice crystals in the upper atmosphere. The ice crystals signify high-altitude, thin cirrus clouds that normally comes before a warm front by one to two days. Typically, a warm front will be associated with a low-pressure system. In a low-pressure area, weather is generally cloudy and winds typically strong.
