Small compact survival kit

My advice on a survival kit are that you need a small compact one to keep (like your kit compacted into an Altoids tin) and a big one put in a safe place.


For the Altoids kit I recommend having:





- Matches(Waterproof is preferred) bound together by rubberband
- The striker from the side of the matches box
- Razor Blade
- Band-Aids
- Small Aspirin
- Ziploc Bag
- Fishing Hook
- Small Amount of Fishing line
- and small but GOOD pocketknife

For the big one I recommend having all of the above plus:

- Small bar of soap
- Nail Clippers
- Latex Gloves
- Paper
- Sharpie (Permanent Marker)
- Teeth Floss
- Q-tips
- (If you wear glasses or contact lenses than an extra pair of glasses or more contacts and solution)
- Eye Drops
- Rubber bands
- A few nails
- and a small multi-purpose knife.

I found that putting the cotton/petroleum jelly in an old film canister works better. Just take the top off an light. You can get old 35mm canisters at any photo lab. They usually have a bunch of them and will give them away.

I have found that pre-rolling plain cotton balls in petroleum jelly make great water-proof fire starters.
They are slightly a bit messy, but I keep at least 3 in a small ziplock in my kit.
Petroleum jelly is very flammable, and on wet days help start a fire even if your tender is damp.

I also stuff a compacted ziplock with lint from the dryer trap. It makes easy tinder in a pinch too.

I think that all of that is very good and some of those I wouldnt have tought about but for the big one maybe adding some paracord or heavy twine like 200 lb would be good at least 100 ft of it. Which I cut mine in 4 parts 25 ft ea.
I also for the first time the other day seen some natural soap which was in powder form which I think is perfect or even grinding up a bar.
