SOG Seal Pup

by Johnny
(Toronto, Ontario, Canada)

SOG Seal Pup hacked with paracord cutter, sharpener and steel striker

SOG Seal Pup hacked with paracord cutter, sharpener and steel striker

I bought a SOG Seal Pup with kydex sheath and modified it by cutting out a portion of the sheath so it can be used to cut cord or string without taking it out of the sheath.

Then I added some velcro and a rapalla sharpener (which I cut down to a smaller size) to cover the cut out portion when not cutting cord or rope. The velcro holds a rod of steel striker on the sheath's backside and I put applied some shiny aluminum tape that would be great for signaling. And of course there's 3 metres of paracord that can be used for a lanyard, belt, shelter, etc. Retrofitting (hacking) it was fun, and I'm pleased with the results.

It's a small blade, but I like to travel light. The SOG Seal Pup is comfortable and I feel safe handling it in every task. Finally, the blade lends itself to choking up for finer carving.

I've abused it in the month I've owned it while hacking, batoning, sawing through metal and plastic (the serrations are great), carving the inside of quinzee, and it's performed well.

I would recommend this knife to any outdoor enthusiast. It's light, comfortable, strong and is a safe option for all ages.

Cool Seal Pup Hack
by: Ben Waller

The knife is a great tool. But the sheath needed help, IMHO, so I hacked it. See, I don't carry a knife on my belt when I hike, preferring to hang it on a lanyard around my neck (sheathed, of course), inverted.

So I removed the screws that attached the belt clip to the sheath, drilled a through-hole in the top edge of the blade-side sheath and placed one of the screws in the hole. This tightened up the sheath so that the knife snaps into it very positively; it can be carried inverted by lanyard and NEVER fall out. Lightens up the whole works as well.

Great hack for a great knife. I'll send you a pic if you want.

Allons,

Ben

Seal pup
by: Anonymous

I had my seal pup for a few years and was very pleased. The seal pup was cute, cuddily and didn't eat alot. Then one day the seal pup crapped on my boot and in a fit of rage I clubbed it to death with a large wooden bat. I was sad but ate it anyway, and then hand sewed mukluks from the pelt. Another tale of true survival.

Seal Pup
by: Anonymous

I have had SOG my seal pup for several years, abusing it severely, even using the tip as a screwdriver. It has peformed flawlessly, never let me down, and takes a good edge.

SOG SEAL Pup Update
by: Johnny

I added a hook and fishing line to the sheath.

Also, I made a video review and demonstration of my SOG SEAL Pup. Watch me start fires, baton, hack and carve at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wxeKTHxNUkQ

nice mod and a 2nd on the Pup
by: Jim

Nice modification.

I downsized from the full sized SOG SEAL to a Pup last year (trying to lighten my pack a bit) and am really happy with it's performance and weight. It's really a good piece of gear.
