If you have a lighter and an innertube you will use it to survive. This is survival skills, not primitive living skills.

every thing you can learn about a fire is valuable information, whether you're in the wilderness or not. Starting and keeping a fire going isn't easy for everyone. Even though you may have started a coal and have enough dry kindling to get a small flame going, knowing that you can use a small piece of innertube is valuable information because sometimes you have to maintain flame long enough to dry out damp wood. A strip or two of innertube will do that. As far as the environment goes, yes...let's keep it clean for others and not rely exclusively on innertubes for kindling, but for the moment in time where your life depends on it...I think Mother Nature will understand. If not, you can make it up to her later.

using an innertube is not a good idea you use water proof matches, safer for the environment. and you can cook over it. melting rubber not a good idea to cook over.
