Start a fire even in wet conditions

by Bert
(Netherlands)

The best way to ignite a fire is to use a lighter or similar and prepare your fire so it will catch immediately. The above taken into account you are bound to find yourself into a situation where these techniques will not be applicable. For instance your kindling is wet, you have no knife and have only thick sticks you can light.

What I always bring with me when I camp in wet conditions is some strips inner tube from a bicycle tire. This will burn like mad, and it does not matter if it gets wet.

every thing you can learn about a fire is valuable information, whether you're in the wilderness or not. Starting and keeping a fire going isn't easy for everyone. Even though you may have started a coal and have enough dry kindling to get a small flame going, knowing that you can use a small piece of innertube is valuable information because sometimes you have to maintain flame long enough to dry out damp wood. A strip or two of innertube will do that. As far as the environment goes, yes...let's keep it clean for others and not rely exclusively on innertubes for kindling, but for the moment in time where your life depends on it...I think Mother Nature will understand. If not, you can make it up to her later.

using an innertube is not a good idea you use water proof matches, safer for the environment. and you can cook over it. melting rubber not a good idea to cook over.
