Stick compass

by Matt
(Colorado)

Take a straight stick or branch with few defects. It needs to make a straight shadow. Then place it in the ground so it stands up straight. When the sun comes up in the morning it shows you where true east is, and the shadow on the stick gives you west. If you stand with east on your right and west on your left you are facing north, and south is to your back.

oh yeah?

Sun rises East & sets West on two days of the year: the Equininoxes. Any other time, it has what is called AMPLITUDE. sine Amplitude equals sine declination by secant of Latitude. This kind if misinformation is why people get lost in the first place! If yo u are out at night, use the stars: they maintain their declination, so the amplitude is the same, all year round.
