The knife I use most

by Dann Jones
(Michigan)

The knife I use most in a survival situation is the Tom Brown Tracker knife. It is more than just a knife, it is in fact a knife, a hachet, a saw, a draw knife, a spear, and the tip is hardened to enable it to chip stone in to arrow points. I can also use it to size and straighten my arrow shafts by using a hole set into the blade for that purpose.

This is not the model made by Tops, this is the Beck made knife which came out before Tops took over to manufacturing of them. I own both. In my view, I believe the Beck is far superior.

Remember I said this is the one I use the most. This only means that if I had a choice to grab one of my knives and run to the woods, that's the one I would grab. However, I would make do with just about anything at hand, even a piece of broken or chipped stone.

I usually carry with me at all times a small pocket knife. If need be I would use that. There is no ONE knife that is the best, it's all up to the individual to choose what they are the most comfortable with. Mine is the TRACKER.

Dave Beck knives
by: D. Elfreth

I am the lucky owner of two knives made by Dave in the early-mid 90s. I met Dave while taking classes at the old Tracker farm. Saw his B-4, fell in love with it, bought it, and still use it every week. It is superb. I had no concept of what really superior steel and workmanship were until I met Dave. He later made me a custom knife sometime around '96 - a longer version of the B-4, with a saw-tooth edge on top. Back then I was dirt-poor and couldn't afford his Tracker knife. I have recently handled the Tops version, and, as best as I can recall, it cannot compare with Dave's in handling, materials, and finish. Had I known ten years ago that Dave would no longer be the builder.....
Oh well - Hello, EBay.

PS In 1994, Dave first pointed me in the direction of Dixon's Muzzleloading shop in Kempton, PA. I have been there every year since for the annual gummakers fair. Thank you Dave.
