I too disliked the Tipi fire, and for the same reasons, and one day, over a beer, I was saying I was going to start using the Log cabin fire instead. Someone at the table, said to me, why don't you just drive the first three sticks of the Tipi fire into the ground with a piece of firewood. (the light came on) No More Falling downs .

homemade firestarter by: Matt
One homemade firestarter that I have found to be effective can be made from an egg carton, dryer lint, and wax (melted crayons or candles will work). It is very effective and is a good way to reuse some things that would otherwise be thrown out. First, separate the individual cells of an egg carton. Fill each piece of the egg carton with as much dryer lint as you can fit inside. Pour hot wax onto the dryer lint. It will soak up a lot of wax. finally dip the entire thing into the wax, leaving a small area out so it doesn't get covered in wax. When you are ready to use the firestarter just light the unwaxed part of the egg carton. It will burn for a long time.
