I'm curious why anyone would ask why you need a knife? Cave or not you need a knife in your pocket or on your belt everywhere you go!!

Dear anonymous you need to forget about the knife
(just for now) and concentrate on developing a survivalist mindset and learn/practice survival skills. Then you would not ask such a question.
Now for the knife NEVER LEAVE HOME WITHOUT IT!

I'm not spelunker, but I did find this in an article on Wikipedia: "During very long trips, it may be necessary to camp in the cave. This necessitates the caver carrying sleeping and cooking equipment."
In that case, I imagine a knife would come in handy for food prep. I suppose it's also possible that one might have to cut a rope if it got snagged or if you found yourself in a bad way.
And after seeing The Descent, you won't be catching me underground anytime soon. ;)
