This knife has a big thick 10" blade with an excellent edge which can plough through anything. The handle is simply two bits of wood pinned on to the tang, so it stands little chance of breaking.

It handles fantastically, the long handle giving the user a good grip for a long swing, with the generous handguard making any slips impossible. The very sharp blade makes it suitable for smaller, subtler tasks, while the weight and length allows for heavy duty axe work as well.

It is also relatively cheap, selling for about £50/$85. I believe they are sold under the name of Cudeman in the UK, and Hen & Rooster in the US.

Make sure you have the basic wilderness skills to safely enjoy your trip.

Big blade is a work horse

I carried an old wood handle ka-bar knife in the field during my 4 year hitch in the USMC during the early 80's, it saw me through 2 med floats, Grenada, Beirut, jungle training in Panama and cold weather training in Northern California, and countless bivouacs in North Carolina woods.
Many times I've seen 3 inch folders snap, and small knives fail performing routine tasks; tent pegs, kindling, firewood, can opening,butchering, cutting tarp and leather,etc. A properly handled and maintained 9 inch blade can do just about anything a short blade can but not vice- versa.
The best knife I saw was a cheap foot long gurkha knife a fellow marine got mail order, he made that hunk of metal do just about anything he wanted it to, and it never failed.
I don't care what the dandies who go in the field as a hobby say, I used my knife professionally to stay alive and comfortable in a wide range of environments and hostile situations, a little 3 inch nub is pretty damn useless for 90% of what you need to do with a knife when you're roughing it. A cheap stainless steel fixed blade, over 6 inches with a wood or synthetic handle, something over 8 ounces in weight, and some common sense field craft will get you home in one piece just fine.
Leave the pocket knife for pencil sharpening when you want to write home.

I personally love big knives, but even I can admit that they aren't always the best choice. If you're going to carry a bowie, or anything big for that matter, it is best to also carry something smaller. I prefer fixed blades for the simple fact that they are usually harder to break... usually. if you're going to carry a lock back make sure it is a good one and some cheap pig sticker, though that should go without saying for any piece of gear.

A big bowie has it's place. That's when quality come into play. Use?? Many. I have spent many many years in the high mountains, meaning above 10,000 feet. I cary a big bowie all the time, not a green horn at all here. I can make a big bowie do just about anything a pocket knife can do or I use my kneck knife.

Well if your goin as Mick Dundee for Halloween this knife would the costume. But not a good knife to carry in your pack. I agree a small to medium lock blade or fixed blade would be a better choice.. Now go "Take A Hike"

Yeah, thats great! Try using that machete to field dress a rabbit or gut a fish. What a waste! Unless you plan on hacking through the Amazon jungle or attacking a heard of buffalo. Your money is much better spent on a locking blade (Buck or old Henry)! This big honkin knife would look great on a greenhorn, fresh off the turnip wagon!
