Winter Travelers

Black eyeliner: weighs an ounce, saves one from snow blindness. Also for those living with serious winters, learn to ice-fish and add an ice-breaking tool to your fishing kit.

Remember that melting snow over a fire wastes FAR less energy than melting it in your hands or mouth.

And if there's an ice storm, dig in and do what you can with what you've got.

If you dont have eyeliner...

charcoal also will work. And if you dont have charcoal...try cutting a stip of inner bark ...cut small slits to see out of and tie it on.

Staying warm and having water
by: Wakien

It may well cause hypothermia for some people if they are trying to eat the snow for water.
Instead, lightly pack your container (lid on tight) mostly full of fluffy clean white snow and wrap your container in a spare shirt or whatever material is handy. Put it securely inside your outter jacket but not right next to your skin and go on about your business.
Your body will melt the snow without loss of core body heat.

I can't remember the source but it said that it takes one calorie to raise one ounce of water one degree inside the body. The point being that a person could burn a lot of calories if they ate snow and then made their body warm it. Besides ingesting the snow would also lower your bodies core temperature and possibly cause hypothermia.
